YENIDZE
Any visitor wonders, seeing on the horizon this dome and these minarets that stand out in the Dresden landscape, whether it is a palace of the Thousand and One Nights or a mosque of glass and steel. It's actually a... an old cigarette factory! It was built by the architect Martin Hammitzsch (who became Hitler's brother-in-law in 1936) between 1907 and 1909 for the Oriental Tobacco and Yenidze Cigarette Factory of the entrepreneur Hugo Zietz, who imported his tobacco from the city of Yenidze, a city formerly located in Thrace (now in Eastern Greece). The large hall topped by a glass dome was dedicated to the industrialized manufacture of cigarettes, the minarets served as ventilation chimneys. Today, an association regularly offers Thousand and One Nights Stories shows (in German) in this fake mosque, and the glass dome houses a restaurant, the Kuppelrestaurant Yenidze, from which the view of the city from the highest Biergarten in Dresden is exceptional.
