Near the Residenzschloss Castle stands a tall and elegant doorway to the neo-Renaissance façade, under which you can walk back and forth between Schlosssplatz, which overlooks the banks of the Elbe, and Schlossstrasse, which enters the heart of the old town. The Georgentor is the former city gate that provided access to the river. It was built between 1530 and 1535 under the reign of George the Bearded One. Remodelled many times over the centuries and fashions, it acquired its neo-Renaissance facade in 1901. This door, which is in fact a residence (it is even topped by a ballroom added at the end of the 19th century), was inhabited until 1918 by the last king of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III. Destroyed in 1945 by Allied bombardments, it was rebuilt almost identically in the 1960s.
