GOLDENER REITER - GOLDEN RIDER
By day and by night, it is impossible to miss it: entirely covered in gold, the high equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong, at the end of the bridge connecting the Altstadt to the Neustadt, shines with a thousand lights. Completed in 1733, three years after the king's death, it was the work of Ludwig Wiedemann, based on a model by Jean Joseph Vinache. It was restored in 1884 by Constantin Lipsius, a professor at the Kunstakademie in Dresden, who added the Latin inscriptions in gold letters to the base of the sculpture. The statue faces north towards Poland, which Augustus II had taken control of in 1697. The pose of the elector prince is inspired by the traditional representations of the Roman emperors. A detail that will not escape the insiders.
