CHOLERABRUNNEN - CHOLERA FOUNTAIN

The Gothic de la Fontaine's neo-Gothic silhouette stands out, mysterious and worrying, facing the Zwinger and the Taschenbergpalais. If it seems strangely ill-seated between these two buildings adorned with baroque bliss, it is that it was actually moved from the Postplatz in 1927, where it was erected in 1846. Designed by Dieu Semper to miraculously save Dresden during the 1840 cholera epidemic, the granite and sandstone fountain was accused of hindering growing traffic at its original location. It is decorated with four religious figures: to the north M, the first Christian prince of Saxony; to the east, Boniface de Mainz, the first apostle of the Germanic people; to the south, Saint John the Baptist and to the west, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, Landgravine consort of Thuringia.
