FÜRSTENZUG - PROCESSION OF PRINCES
On the wall of the Stallhof, in the street that leads from Neumarkt to Georgentor, there is a surprising frieze of graffiti porcelain - a technique for scraping the surface layers of a mortar of different colours, which reveals a drawing. This frieze traces the princely dynasty of Wettin's house. It is the largest porcelain painting in the world with a length of 101.9 metres and a height of 10.51 metres. It was made between 1872 and 1876 by Wilhelm Walther and traces the history of Saxony through its princes electors. It begins with a representation of Conrad the Great, who was Earl of Wettin and Margrave of Meissen between 1123 and 1156, and ends with Georges de Wettin, who ruled from 1902 to 1904. Auguste le Fort is naturally in a good position. At the end of the procession, the artist represented picturesque characters, such as a Saxon peasant and mountain man, the architect Hermann Nikolai or... himself! The only female character in the frieze is a little girl who is in a group of children. The frieze is composed of 24,000 Meissen porcelain tiles.
