AUGUSTUSBRÜCKE - AUGUSTUS BRIDGE
This majestic baroque bridge, which connects the Altstadt with the Neustadt, was built under the direction of the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann in 1731, replacing a bridge dating back to the 13th century. It is 402 metres long and has 17 arches and 18 pillars. In 1910, the bridge was redesigned to accommodate steamboats, a booming Dresden industry at the time. On May 7, 1945, German troops blew up one of the bridge's pillars one day before the end of the Second World War; it was replaced by temporary equipment until it was rebuilt in 1949. Under the GDR regime, the bridge was renamed Georgij-Dimitroff-Brücke, after a Bulgarian communist politician. He will find his Augustusbrücke name again after the fall of the Wall. Since this monumental work, the view of the old town has been nicknamed the Canaletto Blick, in homage to its silhouette immortalized in the 18th century in many paintings by the painter Bernardo Bellotto.
