NEUMARKT
The Neumarkt, large and majestic square, is dominated by the graceful and oval silhouette of the Frauenkirche. Long, it was just a bunch of ruins, so the 1945 allied bombing had left nothing. In 1956, the Communist government then blew down the houses whose carcasses were still standing. Its origins date back to the th century; it was later built in baroque style. The reconstruction of the Neumarkt began after reunification in the 1990 s. Today, a shipyard still occupies part of the place, but does not hinder the pleasure of visiting this superb baroque square lined with palaces like the Johanneum (built in 1586-1588, it houses the Transportation museum) and luxury Hotels. In the centre of the Neumarkt is the bronze silhouette of Martin Luther, the initiator of the Protestant Reformation which, in the th century, had to change the face of Western civilization.
