PRAGER STRASSE
The long shopping street linking the central station (Hauptbahnhof) to the Altmarkt in the old town was built between 1851 and 1853 and already became an important market place at the time. Today, there is nothing left of the 19th century architecture of this street, which was originally built to house housing, whose demand was boosted by the industrialization of the 1840s. Heavily bombed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in the 1960s and 1970s by the communist government and became the first pedestrian zone in Germany. A gigantic group of hotels, including Lilienstein, Königstein and Bastei, was built there between 1968 and 1969 using local sandstone. These establishments, highly rated during the Cold War, are now managed by the Accor hotel group. Renovated in the 1990s, Prager Strasse has lost its unattractive Soviet style in favour of ultra-modern buildings. Very lively, it is the first street that visitors take when they leave the main station to go to Dresden's city centre.
