ALTMARKT
The Altmarkt, lined with elegant arcades and buildings, is the oldest place in Dresden. It was in the middle of the medieval city. The Kreuzkirche, the most important evangelical church in Dresden, has been adjacent to the Altmarkt since the th century. It is estimated that the oldest town hall in the city was installed on the Altmarkt in 1300 and the first pharmacy in Dresden was opened in 1489. Formerly the heart of Dresden's daily life, it is now more tourist but remains lively, especially during the Advent period, during which the magnificent Striezelmarkt, the traditional Christmas market of Dresden, whose tradition dates back to the th century. In February 1945, the allied bombings left no house of Altmarkt intact. Reconstruction began on May 31, 1953, when Walter Integrating, the first secretary of the SED central committee, came to himself to lay the first stone of the new Altmarkt.
