SCHLOSS SONNENSTEIN - SONNENSTEIN CASTLE
This castle, which witnessed the tragic hours of Nazism, remembers the victims and recalls the horrors of mass murder.
A less-than-idyllic curiosity, Sonnenstein Castle, superbly situated on the hillside, experienced tragic times during the Nazi era. Here, Dr. Horst Schumann and his medical team experimented with euthanasia, mainly using gas, on people who had mostly been interned in psychiatric hospitals or old people's homes, as part of the extermination of "useless existences". More than 13,000 patients, plus 1,000 camp prisoners, were murdered between 1940 and 1941. In terms of the number of victims, Sonnenstein was one of the worst Nazi crime scenes in Saxony. This memorial is dedicated to the memory of these victims, and recalls the horrors of mass murder organized as part of the "Final Solution".
