HÖFE AM BRÜHL
The Bleichbüchse, the "lead box" as the people of Leipzig call it, could have been purely shaved by some decision-makers, as it embodied the GDR's own aesthetic. Rounded in shape, a kind of river meander with an aluminium coating, it was built in 1968 to house the first (large) department store in the former East Germany. However, when the decision was taken to build a new shopping centre on this site at the beginning of 2010, the voices were vehement to preserve it; the Bleichbüchse suddenly enjoyed almost a protected monument status. To build the Höfe am Brühl (Brühl course), the builders thus took up a titanic challenge. They completely dismantled the old building, erected the new one and then integrated the facade of the old one on this new building. Thus, the shopping centre, inaugurated in September 2012, boasts a "true-false" futuristic building inspired by the former GDR at its western end. At the same time, the Höfe am Brühl are made up of buildings with a very contemporary appearance, embodied by a gigantic glass façade and another that mimics the effect of venetian blinds. The Höfe am Brühl has become the city's new pride, a state-of-the-art, bright, ultra-modern shopping mall that now houses more than 130 brands on several levels: international fashion chains for women and men, hi-fi shops, toy shops, several supermarkets as well, not to mention telephone shops and a wide range of restaurants.
