GEWANDHAUS
The Gewandhaus, which dates back immaterially to 1781 (1981 for the current building), is the city's most prestigious classical music institution. It was once conducted by the composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The room is very modern nowadays. It enjoys exceptional acoustics and the events that follow one another are always of a very high quality. At the end of the 20th century, the Gewandhaus Orchestra was conducted by the charismatic Kurt Masur, then by Herbert Blomstedt. Today and since 2015, it is the Latvian Andris Nelsons, a former student of Alexander Titov, who officiates at the helm.
