RIQUET HAUS - ELEPHANT HOUSE
This Art Nouveau building, built by architect Paul Lange between 1908 and 1909, is one of the most remarkable in the city. It is a former confectionery and chocolate factory, which today houses an elegant coffee and tea room on its ground floor. Its designer did not hesitate to force the line, imagining beautifully ostentatious colonial motifs as a decoration, in homage to the firm Riquet, whose trade in the East and the Far East had made the best days. The elephant head sculptures that guard each side of the front door are the most distinctive signs of this renowned brand. They almost give the feeling of entering the circus tent. More generally, the oval and rounded shapes, the frescoes in bright orientalist colours (a peacock, a man in traditional Asian costume) make Riquet Haus an exceptional Leipzig residence.
