BIBLIOTHECA ALBERTINA - BIBLIOTHÈQUE ALBERTINA
The main building of the great university library of Leipzig, in the heart of the Musikerviertel, is a splendid neo-Renaissance building built in 1891. After having experienced the destruction of the war and the lack of resources of the communist era, it was finally restored and then reopened in 2002. The main hall is of an impressive splendour, as are the dimensions, all Leipzig's, huge! The balustrade staircase leading to the library rooms is worth a look. The Albertina Library has 850 seats. It holds some 5.5 million books and 6,500 newspapers... It also hosts exhibitions and literary events, including meetings between writers and their readers, in its café space called Alibi.
