MARKT PLATZ
This one-hectare square market square has been the center of Leipzig's economic and political life since the Middle Ages.
Der Marktplatz, or Market Square, is the epicenter of the historic city, and one of its oldest symbols. This one-hectare square has been the center of Leipzig's economic and political life since the Middle Ages. Before they moved to the Messegelände in the 19th century, all the city's fairs were held here. Although damaged during the Second World War, the Markt still boasts some remarkable Renaissance and Baroque buildings. In its own way, it sums up the city's architectural evolution.
