KARL-LIEBKNECHT-STRAßE
Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse is as mythical for its atmosphere as it is endless for its size. This is Leipzig's unmissable street, the queen avenue for night owls, which extends from the south-central part of the city to the Connewitz district. Built at the end of the 19th century, 2.5 km long, this artery of the Südvorstadt gradually established itself in the eyes of all, after the fall of the Wall, as a leading institution in terms of places to go out and highly specialised cultural activities, unlike a city centre marked above all by the opportunities for pure and hard "shopping". The one that the people of Leipzig affectionately call "Karli" is best illustrated by its emblematic cinemas (NaTo and Prager Frühling), its theme restaurants, its clubs and creative establishments. The avenue actually delivers the postcard of an authentic Leipzig, everything that is needed for walkers and regulars, locals and tourists alike, to discover the city in immersion, take the time to live and have as much fun as possible. Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse succeeds in cultivating its former soul while opting for a gradual and appropriate urban reconversion. The Feinkost (at the corner of Braustrasse) is a symbol of this. This former canning factory from the communist era has been transformed into a very colourful "hippie-alternative" place, mixing discos, fashion shops, some offices for freelancers and art galleries. The same is true of the Kulturfabrik (culture factory) Werk II, which now houses a theatre and a concert hall, among other things. As for the countless bar addresses, they are characterized by their diversity and by the audacious mix of tastes and times.
Architecturally, the Karli is bordered by many Belle Epoque style buildings, the most elegant section of which is located between the Petersteinweg (which starts at the Ring) and the Kurt-Eisner-Strasse. Among the sights to discover at any price is the Fischer-Art-Haus (at number 43). Its multicoloured façade is covered with many improbable and funny faces, a plunge into the urban jungle that depicts a citizen engagement as a filigree.
