ALTE MESSE - FORMER FAIRGROUNDS
The Alte Messe fair complex was inaugurated in May 1913 in order to host the technical fairs in Leipzig. In 1928, 17 pavilions were already created to house the various stands of these fairs. During the communist era, this space became Leipzig's main exhibition space, and remained so until 1996, when the current Exhibition Centre was created in the north of the city. After being abandoned, the perimeter of the Alte Messe was converted into an activity space, serving as a springboard for innovative companies, research institutes and laboratories, particularly in the fields of biology and health (Bio City). Located in the direct vicinity of the German National Library, the Alte Messe area also hosts cultural events. It also houses sports halls and a large commercial area. The Alte Messe also regularly hosts a flea market. Overall, it is an interesting place to visit, including for its few halls dating from the communist era: the Soviet Pavilion topped by a golden arrow with its red star (Hall 7) or Hall 22 created in 1989. It is easy to combine your visit with your visit to the nearby Battle of the Nations monument.
