THOMASKIRCHHOF - COURTYARD OF THE CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS
The courtyard of St Thomas Church is a very pretty square, and one of the most visited in the city, especially because of the two highlights of the Messestadt that are located there. It has largely preserved its historical character, with its 18th and 19th century buildings bordered by the superb Thomaskirche, Gothic. Its baroque houses, cobblestones and elegant layout give it a lot of charm; moreover, it has an intimate aspect that is rare in Leipzig. As you walk through the Thomaskirchof, you will necessarily be led in the footsteps of Bach, to whom is dedicated the Bach-Denkmal, a statue dedicated to the great son of the city who sits on the southern side of the square. St Thomas Church was his official church as Kapellmeister; his now defunct house was also on the square, and it is here today that the Bose family, the Bach Museum, is housed in the historic house of his friends. For the record, Bach dethroned poor Leibniz, another prominent son of the city, who had his statue here before; but Leipzig apparently relied more on organ and music than philosophy to sharpen his international image!
