KARL-HEINE-KANAL
Famous stretch of water at the heart of the Plagwitz district's historic spatial organization, bordered by former factories.
They are part of the charm of Plagwitz, southern Lindenau and Schleussig, which sometimes take on the air of an industrial Venice. The Karl-Heine-Kanal is the most famous of these bodies of water. Its bed winds around these districts, stretching from west to east between Lütznerstrasse and the Nonnenstrasse bridge. This canal lies at the heart of the historical spatial organization of the Plagwitz district. Former factories line the canal, all of which have been transformed over the past 20 years, some into housing, others into restaurants or office space. The same is true of the nearby Weisse Elster, where the Karl-Heine-Kanal crosses near the Industriestrasse bridge. The best time to visit Leipzig is between May and the end of October. During the summer season, it's easy to rent a boat, canoe or kayak here, in one of the many clubs set up along the banks (on the Weisse Elster at Antonienstrasse, for example). A unique vantage point from which to discover part of Leipzig's industrial past as you paddle along. This is the best way to understand how the district works, and to appreciate the uniqueness of its architecture.
