WESTWERK
A former foundry, the Westwerk has become, along with the Spinnerei, one of the large spaces dedicated to contemporary art in the Plagwitz district. A place in constant turmoil, creative and full of initiative. Collectively and individually, designer artists and craftsmen have settled there. They create and produce on site, regularly organize events for the general public. The complex, which can be accessed from Karl-Heine-Strasse, is huge. It consists of several rehabilitated industrial buildings, including the Grüne Villa (the green villa), the Dreherei (former turning workshop for mechanical parts), the Turm (the tower) and the Werkstatt (the workshop): some are now rented by private companies, others accommodate catering establishments (Kaiserbad among others) or nightlife. There are also a few shops on site. Not to mention the many artistic events that take place there: an art and craft market for example, but also festivals, thematic exhibitions, happenings and other colourful gatherings. The main surface of the Westwerk, called the Grosse Halle, offers a permanent and sublimated display of contemporary art.
