GALLERY FÜR ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNST - CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY
This contemporary art gallery was created by art critic Klaus Werner, who, during the GDR's time, already expressed the wish to open a museum in Leipzig one day dedicated to German and international contemporary art. The dream came true in 1998, the year in which architect Peter Kulka finished transforming this superb bourgeois house (named Herfuth'schen Villa) to host, after three years of metamorphosis, the much anticipated exhibitions of contemporary art. Six years later, victim of its success, the GFZK had to push the walls and optimize its spaces. The extension was entrusted to the AS-IF group of architects, who concentrated on reinventing the second wing of the house, giving it the shape of a perfect parallelepiped. Since then, the museum has been able to permanently house the works of contemporary artists, particularly the creations of the Leipzig fishpond. At the same time, Galerie Für Zeitgenössische Kunst has a shop, Tschau Tschüssi, where you can buy stylish objects, but also a café-library and a garden.
