AFRIKAHAUS
The Afrikahaus is one of the famous Kontorhäuser, office buildings built in the late 19th century.
Suddenly, a proud African warrior stands before you with his spear and shield. He is guarding the Afrikahaus, one of the famous Kontorhäuser in old Hamburg. Built in 1899 for the company C. Woermann by architect Martin Haller, it illustrates the theme of trade with West Africa. In the inner courtyard paved with white mosaic, two enormous bronze elephants frame the entrance. Wrought iron palms adorn the gateway to the street, and the exterior façade is decorated with tiles inspired by African craftsmanship.
