HULBE-HAUS
An amazing neo-Renaissance building on Mönckebergstraße.
With its triangular pediment and spiral tower, this striking brown brick house is reminiscent of the Dutch Renaissance style, but it was actually built in 1911 for Georg Hulbe, a turn-of-the-century bookbinder and patron of the arts. It housed his bookbinding and leatherworking workshop, a cheeky nod to the huge Kontorhäuser, the office buildings that housed Hamburg's import-export companies and sprang up in the neighborhood in the first quarter of the 20th century.
