ALTONAER RATHAUS (ALTONA TOWN HALL)
This neoclassical building was built as a hall for the Altona train station and later became the city's town hall.
This imposing white neoclassical building was, until 1938, the town hall of the independent municipality of Altona. The Altona Town Hall was originally a railway station when it was opened in 1844, during the Danish rule of Altona (1640-1864). In front of the northern facade, the equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I reminds us that Altona was Prussian after it was Danish. In 1898, the station was converted into a town hall under the direction of architect Emil Brandt.
