GRINDELHOCHHÄUSER
The Grindelhochhäuser is Hamburg's first large ensemble, built between 1946 and 1956.
A set of twelve buildings that we will love or hate, these six "bars" were the first to emerge after the Second World War in this neighborhood destroyed by the bombings of 1943. A precursor of the large housing estates, they were built between 1946 and 1956, originally to house British soldiers of the occupation forces. They were then transformed into low-cost housing by the City of Hamburg. The Grindelhochhäuser form an abrupt contrast with the rest of the affluent Harvestehude district and its pre-war buildings.
