FOUNTAIN OF THE HANSE
The Hanse Fountain stands in the middle of Hansaplatz in the Sankt-Georg district.
It is the fountain of all appointments in St. Georg. It is 17 meters high and was created in 1878 by the sculptor Engelbert Peiffer. It depicts four figures who have left their mark on Hamburg's history: the Roman Emperor Constantine, Charlemagne, Archbishop Ansgar, who evangelized northern Europe from Bremen and Hamburg, and Count Adolf III of Schauenburg and Holstein, who gave Hamburg its centuries-old power. Above them stands Hansa, a figure of freedom that pays homage to the Hanseatic League, the commercial union that made the city rich.
