ALSTERARKADEN
Elegant neoclassical arcades along the canal.
Built along the canal opposite the Town Hall, these arcades have elegant neoclassical forms. With their cafés and distinguished boutiques, they are a showcase for Hamburg. They were an integral part of the project to rebuild the Rathausmarkt after its destruction in the great fire of 1842, which reduced the city center to rubble. As such, the Alsterarkaden are emblematic of Hamburg's Nachbrandarchitektur. Architect Alexis de Chateauneuf drew his inspiration from the arcades of St. Mark's Square in Venice.
