KOMPONISTENQUARTIER
An area entirely devoted to the music of the greatest composers: Brahms, Mendelssohn, Bach, Teleman, Hasse, etc.
The KomponistenQuartier is in fact the amalgamation of six museums into one, including the famous Brahms Museum which has been open since 1971. They are housed in the beautifully reconstructed red brick houses on Peterstraße. They offer a complete panorama of Hamburg's musical history, from the baroque to the modern era. There is the Telemann Museum, the Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach Museum, the Adolf Hasse Museum, the Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn Museum, the Brahms Museum and the Gustav Mahler Museum. Here you can find famous composers as well as musical discoveries in the midst of beautiful instruments, old scores, reconstructions and historical photographs of the city.
Brahms, the great Romantic composer (1833-1897), who stood up to the Wagnerian movement and left behind a masterful oeuvre, is one of the city's most famous sons. The musician lived in this city and was baptized in the church of Saint Michael. His museum traces his musical and intimate life through personal effects, manuscripts and period furniture. A charming little museum that also lets you immerse yourself in the Hamburg of the second half of the 19th century.
In each museum, there is the possibility to listen to pieces of the different musicians thanks to numerous terminals. In each case, the life of the composer is presented in close connection with the history of the city and its musical monuments. Video presentations make the visit more dynamic and synthesize the multiple information.
