JENISCHPARK & JENISCH-HAUS
The most beautiful park in the area with a superb neoclassical villa designed by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Jenischpark. The Jenischpark is one of Hamburg's most elegant and pleasant parks in the affluent residential district of Othmarschen, along the Elbchaussee. It is a landscaped park where Hamburgers flock on weekends, crossed by the beautiful Flottbek stream. It is marked by two buildings with radically opposed styles: the Jenisch-Haus and the Ernst-Barlach-Haus.
Jenisch-Haus. The landscape park is in fact the dependency of its flagship monument: the Jenisch-Haus. The Hamburg senator Martin Jenisch acquired this land in 1828, which was then completely surrounded by fields and woods, and had a country house built for him by one of his acquaintances, the famous Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who left so many monuments in Berlin (including the famous Neue Wache). In a monumental, neoclassical style, Schinkel built a superb villa. Jenisch also transformed the adjoining land into a landscape park, a concept that was very much in vogue among Germany's romantic elite at the time. Preserved as a park at the time of the urbanization of Othmarschen, the villa and its park provide a very bucolic setting for a walk. There is a landscaped garden and glassworks. The house can be visited, with its Biedermeier, rococo and neoclassical interiors. The temporary exhibitions are varied and of high quality; photography, contemporary painting... The Jenisch-Haus museum is a branch of the Altona Museum.
