The Treppenviertel in Blankenese is one of the most charming in Hamburg: beautiful villas on a hilly site.
In the former fishing village of Blankenese, a charming district stretches between Am Kiekeberg and Strandweg. More than 5,000 steps lead down the Süllberg hill to the bank of the Elbe, which is lined with tall, proud trees, a real fairy-tale setting. It was here that the wealthy merchants of the 19th century built their holiday homes. Gründerzeit (mid-19th century) houses and parks line the endless steps of this "staircase district" (Treppenviertel) and the river banks are dotted with charming hotels reminiscent of Proust's most beautiful beaches in Balbec, including the Strandhotel Blankenese, a true Art Nouveau jewel with a white façade. Get lost in this small neighborhood, observe each of the houses, all different, some brick, others colored, some more modern... Their decoration is full of amusing details: unusual signs, boat anchors, statue of a sailor waiting in front of a house. They also have charming little gardens full of flowers, very well maintained. Enjoy the view of the Elbe River. For example, you can take the Bremer Weg, which offers a very nice view. It is a district full of contrasts: opposite the beautiful houses leaning against the hill, you discover the industrial port, its containers, its Airbus and its cranes. Going down the Treppenviertel, you arrive at Strandtreppe, the beach of Blankenese. The sunsets are superb!
