LANDUNGSBRÜCKEN
The emblematic gateway to the port of Hamburg and the point of departure for ships.
These old piers, "landing pontoons", look great with their imposing tuff entrance building in Jugendstil style. The latter leads to pontoons attached to the mainland which were built as a landing place for ships. Today, even though there are other terminals at several locations in the harbor, the Landungsbrücken has become a sort of Hamburg's seafront, with ferry terminals, and historic and tourist ships moored here. Along the pontoons, there are stalls selling fish sandwiches (Fischbrötchen) or mugs of beer. There are several restaurant boats and from here you can go sailing on the harbor, on the Elbe or even further on a cruise. Among other things, there are the terminals of the HAPAG ships, which serve several destinations on the North Sea. For the price of a ticket, you can take the line 62 which takes you to the island of Finkenwerder in the middle of the harbor for a little trip on the Elbe without breaking the bank. Very lively during the day, the Landungsbrücken are the best way to capture the harbor atmosphere of Hamburg, and we highly recommend a stroll there, even if you don't want to take a boat.
History. From this "ferry terminal" millions of citizens - from the 19th century until the war - took a steamer to leave Germany and try their luck in the New World on the other side of the Atlantic.
