Marktstraße is the artery of alternative trade in the Karolinenviertel.
In recent years, Hamburg's alternative scene has moved to the Karolinenviertel, a multikulti immigrant neighborhood. Functioning as a small village on the outskirts, this neighborhood with its pleasant "Gründerzeit" architecture has been transformed into a colorful urban space filled with hippie and alternative stores, its walls are covered with graffiti and casual bars are numerous. Marktstraße is the main street of this little hive of activity: cafés, bars and design stores galore. Many of the stores are also artists' studios.
