Lübeck Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
The first stone of this red brick cathedral was laid by Henry the Lion in 1173 and the Romanesque complex was completed in 1230, but transformed into the Gothic style in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its two gigantic towers are impressive, they measure 120 m high. The interior is sober, an immense crucifix of 17 meters, realized by the German painter and sculptor Bernt Nokte (1477), comes to dress and dominate the nave. Beautiful 15th century altarpieces can also be seen on the pillars at the crossing of the transept.
