BURGTOR
One of the preserved gates of the old city walls of Lübeck.
At the other end of the old town from the Holstentor is another gate, Lübeck's lesser-known North Gate, also worth a visit with its Gothic architecture, three arches and tall central tower. It was built in 1444 to defend the northern part of the city walls. The Burgtor (literally castle gate) owes its name to the former Lübeck castle on the heights of the Trave, which became a convent (Burgkloster) in the 13th century and now houses part of the European Hanseatic Museum's exhibition.
