MUSEUM BEHNHAUS DRÄGERHAUS
A nice surprise is this museum in Lübeck with a beautiful collection of paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.
This small museum should not be underestimated and should keep you busy for several hours. It is housed in two splendid Lübeck merchants' houses with the appearance of mansions: the Behnhaus and the Drägerhaus.
The Behnhaus is a beautiful bourgeois house from the end of the 18th century that has retained all its charm. The interior was redesigned in the classical style in the early 19th century. It was here that the last film adaptation (2008) of Thomas Mann's famous novel The Buddenbrooks (1901) was shot.
The adjoining Drägerhaus houses a collection of paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, very nicely staged. Beautiful paintings of German expressionism, including some great names: August Macke, Paula Mendelssohn-Becker, Ludwig Kirchner, etc. In addition, you will be surprised to discover landscapes by the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich and portraits by Edvard Munch who lived in Germany between 1902 and 1908, especially in Lübeck. The name Gotthardt Kuehl may not be familiar to you, but his scenes of everyday life (the Lübeck orphanage, skateboarders, etc.) are worth your time. His style is close to that of Impressionism.
Until the Buddenbrook Museum in Mengstraße reopens (probably not until 2027), some of the exhibits are on display in the first floor wing of the Drägerhaus.
