COURSES AND PASSAGES OF LÜBECK
Several courtyards and passages to discover in the old town of Lübeck.
The "Gänge und Höfe" - as they are called in Lübeck - are courtyards and passageways hidden all over the city and whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. There are about 90 of them in Lübeck, such a variety is unique in the world! You often have to push a door or a gate from the main street to get to them and then you fall into a real doll's world with charming little houses full of flowers, often no higher than one or two stories. In fact, in medieval times, they were collective charity houses, financed by the town's notables and intended to house the most destitute, the widows of sailors or the elderly... They have now been restored and offer a pleasant, quiet and very green setting for a walk. These vestiges of the medieval period allow you to go back in time and imagine life in the Hanseatic era. They are reminiscent of the Belgian beguinages and are one of the undeniable attractions of Lübeck. Have fun looking for these little passages through the city and, above all, dare to enter these wonder courtyards for a moment out of time. The most beautiful ones are in Glockengießerstraße, Wahmstraße, Dr. Julius-Leber-Straße and Engelswisch. They are called Hellgrüner Gang, Füchtingshof (one of the most remarkable), Glandorps Gang, Hassen-Hof or Höveln Gang. They are all indicated on the tour map available at the tourist office.
