The Nikolaikirche is the main church of Kiel and the oldest building in the city.
The Protestant Church of St. Nicholas is the oldest building in Kiel. It is a beautiful red brick church from the 13th century, typical of the region. Since its construction in 1242, it has been remodeled several times, but it still retains its original gothic lines. In front of the church stands the statue Der Geistkämpfer by the expressionist sculptor Ernst Barlach. It is located on the market square where a Christmas market is held in winter.
