The program of the Opernhaus Kiel includes operettas, operas, ballets and musicals.
Together with the city hall, the Kiel opera house is the other imposing monument on the Rathausplatz. The beautiful red-brick building was opened in 1907 with excerpts from Wagner and Beethoven's Fidelio. The Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) design was destroyed by the bombings of World War II and the opera house had to be rebuilt in the 1950s. In 1953, the new opening featured Fidelio once again. Today, the program includes operas, operettas, ballets and musicals.
