STRANDHOTEL ACHTERT DIEK * * *
Langeoog is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. This car-free island lies in the heart of the World Heritage Wadden Sea, one of the world's most important resting and feeding grounds for millions of migratory birds. The island is home to one of Germany's largest seabird colonies, where silver gulls nest in particular. Part of the Wadden Sea National Park's quiet zone, it lies behind Melkhörn Dune to the east of the island. The seagull colony has been protected since 1875. Compared with other East Frisian islands, the island of Langeoog has the advantage of enabling the observation of large flocks of migratory birds and rare species such as the common sandpiper or the lapwing from a relatively short distance. As the birds are sometimes found very close to the path, there is also a good chance of discovering extremely rare bird species. Among the special bird species typical of Langeoog are the common sandpiper, lapwing, sanderling and dwarf sandpiper, marsh harrier and heron. Strandhotel Achtert Diek offers a partnership program for bird protection and birdwatching associations, with special rates and group prices for members. The hotel also offers birdwatching tours and lectures on Langeoog.
