Spanning three countries - Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands - the Wadden Sea is considered the world's largest system of tidal sandbanks.
On the German side, two national parks form part of this area: Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, which is of particular interest to us here. For your personal culture, it's worth noting that Denmark holds the largest part of the conservation area.
A trip to the Schleswig-Holstein National Park offers unrivalled views of sand dunes, endless expanses and beautiful beaches. The park is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Some of the panoramas are truly postcard-perfect. Photographers will have a field day.
You can explore the national park on foot through the salt meadows, by bike or even by sea. A boat will take you to the Hallingen, small inhabited but unspoilt islands where a rich fauna has made its home, including seals and porpoises. Bird lovers will also be able to admire the many poetic flights of birds.
The Wadden Sea is a rare natural jewel that reminds us that humanity owes its salvation above all to its natural living environment, to our planet. It goes without saying that it's vital to preserve this kind of green lung, and that it's also essential to behave responsibly during your visit.
