Founded in 1779, the Fridericianum is one of the world's first public museums. Named after its creator, the "Landgrave" Frederick II, the Fridericianum was built at the height of the Enlightenment, in line with the philosophy of making culture accessible to as many people as possible. The "Landgrave" had his personal collections exhibited here, and the regional library, where the Grimm brothers worked, was established. Every five years, the building hosts the contemporary Documenta exhibition.
