MARIENBURG CASTLE
Built between 1858 and 1867, this castle was a gift from King George V of Hanover (1819-1878) to his wife Mary (1818-1907). This one, tired of the falbalas of court life, made it her summer residence. Its architectural style is in line with the canons of neo-Gothic architecture, which was very popular at the time. The war in 1866, which broke out between Prussia and the Kingdom of Hanover, halted the work. As a result, the house remained uninhabited for 80 years. The last of the princes of Hanover sold his property to the German state in November 2018. Indeed, the costs of maintaining the castle were far too high.
Be careful, this castle is only to be explored on a guided tour. Contact the castle office or the tourist office in Hanover to book in advance. You will be able to choose several options, costumed or not, more or less long guided tours. Consult the castle's website.
