SAINT-BLAISE CHURCH IN BRUNSWICK
Superb Romanesque-Gothic cathedral built in 1175, housing the body of the Duke and his wife Mathilde, as well as relics.
The superb Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, the Dom, was founded by the powerful Duke of Saxony Henry the Lion (1129-1195), one of the most powerful princes of his time. He ruled over a territory equivalent to what is now Lower Saxony. During his reign, Braunwschweig became his capital. The Duke had his palace built in 1150 and the cathedral built in 1175 on his return from a pilgrimage. The Dom houses his body as well as that of his wife Mathilde, and the relics he brought back from the Holy Land. The interior is superb.
