HILDESHEIM CATHEDRAL
This cathedral was destroyed in a bombing raid and rebuilt in the same shape as it was after the war.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral, though a reproduction, is a marvel. Its origins date back to 815, when, according to legend, Louis le Débonnaire decided to build a chapel on the spot where he received a divine sign. A first stone building burned down in 1046, and it was Bishop Hezilo who built this basilica between 1054 and 1079. Destroyed in a bombing raid, the cathedral was rebuilt in its original Romanesque style in the 1950s.
