SAINT-MICHEL CHURCH
Protestant church built between 1010 and 1033, featuring a superb wooden ceiling and a powerful Romanesque silhouette.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the imposing Michaeliskirche dominates the city with its powerful Romanesque silhouette. Built between 1010 and 1033 by Bishop Bernward, the church was originally part of a monastery and became Protestant with the Reformation in 1542. The painted wooden ceiling from the early 13th century is absolutely superb: one of the masterpieces of late Romanesque painting in Germany. Dismantled in 1943, it was fortunately saved from destruction, while the church was rebuilt between 1950 and 1957.
