RAMMELSBERG MINE
Now a museum, this complex in Goslar was a mining site for 1,000 years.
Just 2 km from Goslar, this UNESCO World Heritage site is an astonishing testimony to Harz mining culture. It is the only mine in the world to have been in continuous operation for 1,000 years. Cistercian monks were the first to mine, and mining was developed on a large scale from the 16th to the 19th century. Tin, copper, lead and silver were extracted using an innovative hydraulic process. Thanks to the extraction of these riches, Goslar became one of the seats of the Holy German Empire.
