CENTRAL PLACE
Baroque square with old half-timbered houses, classical houses, fountain and municipal museum.
The highly baroque market square, in the heart of the city centre, also seduces with its mix of genres. The old half-timbered houses blend nicely with the classic pastel-coloured houses, decorated with white stucco. The market fountain, richly decorated and dominated by the city's patron saint, Saint Peter, occupies the centre of the square. As you wander through the centre, also note the superb three-mage house, built in 1230, with its high entrance door! As the wall of the medieval enclosure had not yet been completed, each house protected itself as it could, for example by using a ladder, which could be removed to make it inaccessible to thieves. The superb Saint-Simeon convent, near the Porta Nigra, dates from the 11th century and now houses the Municipal Museum.
