OLD CITY
Visit the Heinrich Heine house, town hall, castle, terraces and Japanese center.
Stroll through the streets of the old town... Starting from Blockerstrasse, you'll discover the house where Heinrich Heine, one of Germany's greatest poets, was born in 1797. The town hall was badly damaged during the Second World War. Jan-Wellem, the Elector who contributed to the town's development, is enthroned in the adjoining square. Only one tower remains of the castle originally built on Burgplatz, the rest having been destroyed by fire in 1872. Stroll along the Rhine on the Rheinuferpromenade, a popular stroll for Düsseldorf residents, where in summer, terraces compete for space. Near the railway station, Immermannstrasse is Düsseldorf's Japanese center, with the largest Nipponese community after London (7,000 members). Thanks to the presence of major Japanese companies, you'll find restaurants, supermarkets and even a temple to the Empire of the Rising Sun..
