MELATEN-FRIEDHOF CEMETERY
Cemetery dating back more than 200 years, featuring the graves of many of the city's leading figures
Even though Cologne was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, there are still some traces of history. The Melaten Cemetery is a perfect example. In this cemetery, which is more than 200 years old, many famous people from the city are buried. Before the French occupation, it was a home for the sick and lepers. The first trace of this house dates back to the 13th century. Melaten was also an execution site. Many sick and criminal Cologne residents were executed in Melatenhof. In 1749, it was finally turned into a cemetery, because the French occupation forces forbade the burial of bodies within the city walls. Today, it is a place for walking where you can admire the impressive family graves from different eras.
