SAINT-MARTIN'S CATHEDRAL
This cathedral features grey stone facades, five bell towers and two modern sculptures.
The gray stone facades and the five slate bell towers of the Bonner Münster are a masterpiece of late Romanesque art. The cathedral dates from the 12th century and was probably completed before the construction of the Cologne cathedral began. It seems that these same places, where the Romans had already built a place of worship, saw the martyrdom of the soldiers Cassius and Florentinus, patrons of the city: you will see two modern sculptures of their heads, decapitated, on the outside. The interior of the cathedral, painted according to German custom, contrasts strangely with the sobriety of its exterior. The pulpit as well as the pillars of the central nave are in rococo style. The Romanesque cloister, the only one in the region to be so well preserved, is a marvel.
